‘Frock-On’ fashion shoot at a ruined country house

Wendy had a REALLY rainy day for her wedding last June and the powers that be must have been having a right laugh at the torrential rain on the morning of her post-wedding ‘Frock-On’ fashion shoot. The rain battered the car all the way to my secret location. We decided to have lunch early to see if the skies cleared up, which of course was entertaining in itself since Wendy was in a pub having lunch in her wedding dress, as you do! Somebody must have taken pity because by the time we’d had lunch the rain had stopped and the sun was out, hoorah!

Toni worked her magic with Wendy’s hair and make-up. We wanted to go for a completely different look to the wedding day and decided on a loose up-do that was full of glamour.

The great thing about a post-wedding shoot is that it’s all about being creative. The pace is much slower than a wedding or portrait session and it’s more akin to a big production fashion shoot with attentive styling, hair and make-up adjustments throughout. Styling and posing is very fashion influenced and whilst some of the poses are fairly uncompromising, they look simply fabulous. It takes some trust in your photographer to climb high up on a wall in your wedding dress but the end results are totally worth it!

Engagement photography – Greg and Lisa

Greg and Lisa couldn’t have planned their pre-wedding shoot outfits more perfectly. The muted tones worked really well with the naturals colour palette of the streets of Market Harborough. Stonework, old oak doors and the typical yellow Northamptonshire stone were great backdrops for their portraits.

Roberta & Ashley, Notley Abbey

Ashley and Roberta’s wedding was set to be a particularly long day for me. The wedding was at 11am in Chalfont St. Giles which is some way from home and not being a morning person I struggled with the 6am start. And I wasn’t due to finish until late evening when chinese lanterns were set off. But I had the loveliest welcome from Rio & Buster (two King Charles Cavaliers, my favourite breed of dog) when I arrived at Roberta’s parents’ house where the girls were getting ready. That perked me up. And then, when Roberta led me to her two pairs of wedding shoes (one pair for the day and a party pair for the evening) I knew this was going to be a good day. Wide awake now!

After the church it was off to Notley Abbey, in Buckinghamshire, between Thame and Aylesbury. A wedding at Notley Abbey is like a big house party. You have exclusive use of the venue and it’s really flexible with all its different rooms. You can use the space just as you wish. I love how it’s both old and new at the same time, and it has lots of potential for photography.

Since it was going to be such a long day my good friend and fellow photographer Rosie Parsons came along to help (big hugs x) and we were both blown away with all the beautiful details. The flowers were divine – roses in pretty ice cream colours. And the table settings were some of the best I’ve seen. They had ‘perfect duo’ table names like Meribel & skiing, sausages & mash and strawberries & cream, and each table card had a hand-drawn ilustration to decorate. The place-cards were rather unusual: shoes for the girls (of course!), champagne bottles for the boys and boats for the children. There were bowls of bon-bons in colours which matched the flowers (that’s attention to detail for you!) as well as individual menus and a sprig of lavender for each guest. All set off with luxurious silver-ware. Awesome.

The best detail for me though was Roberta’s ‘something old’. She had a little black cat tied into her bouquet which was the very same little black cat that her Grandad had carried with him during the war. How lovely is that?

Silver screen wedding

David and Anna were married by one of Anna’s closest friends, Reverend Sally Wright, at St. James church in Fulmer, Buckinghamshire. The ceremony was followed by a reception in Heatherden Hall at the world famous Pinewood Studios in Iver, Buckinghamshire. A really unusual venue with sprawling and beautiful grounds.

Anna looked amazing in her lace gown which was adorned with crystals and carried a beautiful bouquet of roses, created by Jess, another friend. David looked rather dapper too, perfected with button-hole by Jess!

The grounds of Heatherden Hall are lovely and despite the rain we made good use of them. I did wonder about the perils of asking for some of the exterior fittings to be removed for the group photographs (well, that was the only spot I wanted to use and I wanted it perfect!) but then thought back to my TV advertising days and remembered that such requests are a regular occurence in TV & film!

The wood panelled dining hall looked awesome all set for dinner. I especially loved the mini clapper board place-cards. And there was yet more talent in the house – the wedding cake was lovingly made and decorated by Anna’s parents. They did a fantastic job.

My favourites …

Ricky and Heidi’s pre-wedding shoot

I first met Ricky and Heidi at The National Wedding Show and we’ve been in contact so much since then that it felt like we were friends before we’d really spent any time together. I can see why online dating works LOL

We met at Old Thorns in Hampshire, which will be their reception venue, for their pre-wedding shoot and planning meeting. Being a golf course location the scenery is just stunning and I have some beautiful scenic shots up my sleeve for their wedding in October!

Some faves …
