‘Alice in Wonderland’ bridal fashion shoot part 1: the tea party
A wedding day isn’t really the time to be experimenting and trying new things. But it’s important to keep pushing yourself, learn new skills, think creatively and continually improve. So I often plan ‘creative days’ where I’ll get together with models, stylists and other wedding suppliers for a day of shooting where anything goes.
If you’ve been following my blog for a while you’ll have seen the results of previous creative days. But this time I wanted to create something a little different and being a child at heart I thought I’d theme the shoot as ‘Alice in Wonderland’.
I didn’t want to do anything too literal but the film was a big inspiration for the styling and props.
For the tea party scene we went quite vintage and girly in feel. Something that would be glamorous and very much work for a real wedding but with some drama too. Lots of vintage china was used and the wedding thrones added much glamour (I think we all wanted to take those home!). Beautifully fresh shades of green and pink flowers filled tea cups, milk jugs and tea pots. There were lots of scrummy cupcakes with swirly icing, roses and glitter.
Only big was going to work with the hair and outfits! The dramatic Ian Stuart gowns were perfect and here the models wore ‘Seville’ and ‘Bellevue’. And Alice met Ascot with some gorgeous couture bridal hats.
Look carefully and you’ll see a white rabbit too!
It’s important to say that that the models I choose for these shoot aren’t professional models, they’reĀ regular people who have other jobs but are happy to dress up and be photographed. As a wedding photographer, working with non-pros, you need good posing and direction skills to make your clients look good in their photographs. A professional model would know what to do in front of the camera, so I deliberately steer clear of experienced models to keep me on my toes.

Thanks Chris. All natural light except #3 which is off camera flash. The heavens opened at this point and it went really really dark!

Lovely images, the vintage style accessories and spring colours are gorgeous. Must have been a great day!
These are so gorgeous, working behind the scenes with you it’s amazing to see the final images. The lighting in #3 is great as you get the chandalier shadows on the wall. But I love them all!
