Fawsley Hall is one of my favourite Northamptonshire wedding venues. We’re so spoiled in the ‘Shire with country houses but the setting of this one makes it all the more special.

The drive through the windy country lanes, with glimpses of the hall through the trees, until finally you’re rewarded with a clear view across the field, never gets old. The view of the hall standing majestically at the top of the hill is breathtaking.

The setting itself is just as incredible. A 360° nature-filled view with rolling fields, ponds and lakes, and so many sheep.

The bedroom suites are something else. Sumptuous, stylish, and full of character - but of the times too. Amazing to stay in and spacious for groups getting ready together.

Also, Fawsley’s afternoon tea is to die for and I can happily vouch for their spa - utter bliss!

If you’ve been searching for the castle on the hill that Ed Sheeran croons about … you might have just found it.

Your guide to

5* wet-weather options. Rain on your wedding day is no problem at Fawsley Hall. The entrance portico and reception spaces are large enough for group photos. And there are gorgeous nooks and crannies with beautiful light inside the house for pictures of you two. Inside is no second place to outside!

05.

Dog-friendly photos. Your furry family members can join you for photos outside in the gardens and grounds. And there’s plenty of room for them to stretch their legs and show their excitement for you. Fawsley church is also paw-friendly - so they can fetch your rings down the aisle and then lead the way back. Cute!

04.

Incredible light. The suites for getting ready in the main house have big, striking windows which provide wonderfully calming and breathtaking views for you, and let in plenty of quality light for your photographer. (If you haven’t come across this yet, light is your wedding photo BFF!)

03.

Beautiful backgrounds. In news to absolutely no one, Fawsley Hall is one of the most photogenic venues in Northamptonshire, with nothing around except fields, trees, and sheep. No cars or corner shops to avoid in the photos! Every background will be beautiful. Just don’t walk through the field to the church in your Choo's!

02.

Varied backgrounds. Fawsley Hall has so many aspects to it - dramatic architecture, historic interiors, manicured gardens, formal lawns, wild countryside, the list goes on. Which means your photos will be varied and filled with interest. And it’s all close to hand, so no need to walk miles or spend ages on portraits.

Five reasons you’ll love Fawsley Hall for your wedding photography

In case you haven’t guessed, I’m Sarah, a documentary wedding photographer based in Northamptonshire.

Fawsley Hall was one of the very first wedding venues I ever photographed at, way back in 2008. Over the years, I’ve captured civil ceremonies and receptions in both the hall itself and in Knightley Court. (Or Knighty Court as it was spelled on one of my past couples’ wedding invitations!) And Fawsley church has been a regular fixture, too. (That’s my fave!)

I always look forward to visiting. All that nature is good for the soul whether you’re working or celebrating! Fawsley’s dual-side of architecture and countryside is something I really love to bring into photos here. Being so immersed in nature, there’s no mistaking the season, so it gives your photos a sense of place and another layer of story.

Fawsley never gets old. There are so many parts of the venue and grounds you can use. Then add in the weather and season. A wedding and photos here are always unique.

Natalie and Alex had a joyful summer wedding at Fawsley’s St Mary’s Church, with their black lab Ted by their side. With a soaring gospel choir, confetti storm, roaming brass band, emotional speeches, candlelit cake, and vibrant evening party, the day was full of meaning and fun.

Come and see

This lovely pair had an intimate Spring wedding with 30 guests. Terry got ready at home whilst Alison prepared in one of Fawsley's stunning suites. They said 'I do' in The Salvin Long Room, enjoyed relaxed drinks in The Great Hall, ran outside to catch a rainbow, and then had a music-filled dinner in the Salvin boardroom.

Joanne and Richard had an autumn wedding at Fawsley Hall. They both got ready in the house, before their civil ceremony in the Valentine Suite in Knightley Court. Everyone enjoyed drinks outside in the courtyard in the autumn sun, including some very competitive games of Scrabble and Guess Who!

Alison & Terry

“Terry and I feel so blessed that you were our photographer. You were a calming influence, so professional and your photos are the most stunning we’ve ever seen. We can’t begin to tell you how happy your photos make us feel. They're wonderful and brought our day to life again. Unique and perfect. I will recommend you to everyone who will listen. You’re amazing.”

Natalie & Alex

“Thank you for these AMAZING photographs. There are so many that we would like to print and it is really difficult to choose! You were so helpful and patient on our wedding day and half the time we didn’t even realise we were being photographed. The images totally exceeded our expectations and we can’t thank you enough.”

Jasmine & James

"The photos were beautiful and really captured the emotions as well as the surroundings. We felt special having our bride and groom photos taken and hardly noticed Sarah and her team there on the day. Everything was fun and relaxed. Communication was amazing and easy which helps during all the wedding planning. Just amazing."

Want to take in more of Fawsley Hall

Shall we continue or take a detour?

Consider outdoor speeches. Wondering whether to do your speeches outside? It’s a “yes” from me! The casual nature of everyone standing and being in the fresh air is a great way to make a wedding feel more relaxed. And Fawsley has a few spots which really lend themselves to this, both practically and photographically. There’s the Knot Garden, with your speakers and immediate families on the staircase, and everyone else gathered around in the garden below. The Great Hall, if you have exclusive use. Speakers stand in front of the fireplace and your guests can sit or stand as they please. Or the front of Knightley Court, with speakers in front of the doors and everyone gathered around.

05.

Be careful with coloured lights. Lots of couples like coloured uplighters in The Saunders Suite. This not only helps set the mood for a great party but also adds more vibrance to your evening photos. But a colour wash reflects on everything - faces, outfits, flowers - so unless that’s part of your daytime styling, save the colour wash for the dancefloor.

04.

Contain clutter. If you’re keen to have clean, clutter-free getting-ready photos, plan how you’ll keep the spaces tidy. Some ideas: Ask housekeeping to make the beds and collect room service trays promptly. Have a separate room to photograph outfits and get dressed. Keep refreshments in a corner, rather than as a focal point in the middle of the room! Designate one area for bags and put away anything you don’t need out.

03.

Enlist your Ushers to help with your group photos. The best spots for group photos, though not a long walk, are separate from your drinks reception areas. (The front entrance for drinks in The Great Hall and the lawn for Knightley Court weddings.) To help the photos flow quickly, ask your Ushers to gather everyone involved in your groups before we start. That will avoid the need to wait for people to arrive between each photo.

02.

Set aside 20 minutes for portraits. One of the joys of Fawsley Hall for wedding photography is the compact but packed nature of the gardens. The Knot Garden is incredible for pictures of the two of you. It has lots of interest within just a few steps, which means we can capture a variety of images quite quickly. 20 minutes is ideal - and we can easily fit that in while your guests find their seats for dinner, so you don’t miss anything.

FAQs

Fawsley Hall is one of those venues that works well all year round with great indoor and outdoor spaces. And it's immersed in nature, so the season will be prominent in your photos. Frolicking lambs in the spring, the colour of summer, autumnal trees for days, cosy vibes and Christmas trees in winter. Just pick your favourite time of year!
St Mary's church is the closest. It's a short, happy walk from Fawsley Hall and you can even watch your guests walking across the field as they arrive while you're getting ready! But it's also really well placed for church ceremonies in and around Brackley, Banbury, Southam, Daventry, west Northampton, and Towcester.
Fawsley Hall is very flexible for photos, especially if you have exclusive use. If you don't have sole use of the venue, we just need to be considerate of others' enjoyment, and some areas, like the Great Hall, may be busy. But otherwise, the hall, its grounds, and the surrounding fields are accessible at any time.
If you've booked Knightley Court, we can use The Valentine Suite (with the mural wall as the background) for your group photos. And if you've chosen the main house itself, we can use the portico entrance or the Salvin Long Room. For pictures of the two of you, I love the portico as it gives you an outdoor feel whilst staying perfectly dry. The corridor to the Salvin rooms (which is more beautiful than it sounds) has great light. Or we can remember we're in the British countryside, grab some brollies, and wander into the gardens. There are lots of gravel paths so you won't sink into the grass!
My go-to spots for portraits at Fawsley Hall are the Knot Garden, which has several great features like the grand staircase, topiary hedges, and a stag statue … and the lawn in front of the hall, using the house or field as a backdrop. For golden-hour couple shots, the best light is usually in the field behind the Knot Garden and tennis court.
I love the portico at the front entrance to the house. It works in every weather and lighting situation. Shaded in the sun, covered in the rain, and it's sooo Fawsley. If your drinks reception is in the Knightley courtyard, the lawn on the other side of the hedge works well. It's closer and has a lovely countryside background.
You're already in the right place for this! Fawsley Hall has fabulous bedrooms, a restaurant, and a spa, so you can make a weekend of it. If you need more bedrooms, Staverton Park (NN11 6JT) and Hellidon Lakes (NN11 6GG) are just over 10 minutes away.
Other than Fawsley Hall itself, try The Canalside restaurant at Whilton Locks Garden Village (NN11 2NH), which is great for coffee and pastries or lunch. For a gastropub, the menus for The Crown Inn in Weston (NN12 8PX) and The Royal Oak in Eydon (NN11 3PG) are scrummy! Both are 20 minutes away. For fine dining, try The Plough in Little Everdon (NN11 3DT) or The Red Lion at Hellidon (NN11 6LG), which are a 10-minute drive. If you like a side of town with your country, try Towcester, which is less than half an hour away and has a variety of brands and independents. Please check opening times and days (and postcodes!) before you travel!
Travel is included in my prices for weddings at Fawsley. It's around 40 minutes from home and every mile is a joy!

There’s a hidden room above the Great Hall where secret meetings were held in the lead-up to the civil wars.

For some unknown reason, the family crest on the outside of the bay window is on its side.

The large shield in the Great Hall shows 334 quarterings of heraldry, representing every Knightley marriage up to the 19th century.

You can sleep in the same room (now the 1575 Suite, in case you want to) that Queen Elizabeth I stayed in after helping her father, Henry VIII, with the dissolution of the monasteries.
