A countryside family photo shoot

October 5, 2018

This family session is one of the reasons I decided to make my portrait photography an official thing. It ticked lots of boxes for me: enjoying and shooting in the countryside, a chance to catch up with the loveliest wedding clients and creating a mix of loosely directed portraits with relaxed images that capture a family being a family.

I photographed Mark and Juanita’s wedding a few years back and since then they’ve become four with two boys, Gareth and Leo, joining their world. Juanita got in touch while her Mum was visiting from Australia to arrange a family photo session while they had the rare chance of being all together.

So on one very cold New Year’s Eve we ventured out into the fields behind their house to take capture some memories. It really was as simple as them going for a walk, with their sweet pooch Phoebe tagging along of course, and me taking some photos along the way. Some of the shots were completely natural capturing the simple joys of running down a hill and then slowly climbing back up again. Other shots, like the ones at the gate at the bottom of the hill and with the church in the background (the very church where Mark and Juanita got married!), were lightly directed but with lots of room for everyone to enjoy and be themselves so that their personalities shone through.

It was a cold, damp day but there was so much warmth and so much heart in this family that nothing else mattered.

I won’t say that it was easy getting two strong-willed boys and a dog looking at the camera at the same time! But that’s what I love more than anything about this session … that it captures everyone’s characters. Falling about laughing and mischievous faces are the best!

More shoots like this, please!

Are you planning a trip out somewhere and want to get some relaxed photos while you’re all enjoying yourselves? Give me a shout! I’d love to hear from you :)
