An interview with | Lemon Zest Cuisine
Food is a huge part of a wedding and one of the most important decisions as far as your guests’ enjoyment is concerned, not to mention one of the biggest expenses, so it’s important to choose a wedding caterer you can rely on.
Lemon Zest is a firm favourite amongst my clients so I’ve seen them in action a lot and thanks to some very kind couples I’ve been lucky enough to test their food too ~ I can confirm that they’re one of the best choices you could make! They’re simply the zest! #sorrynotsorry
Today the lovely lemons are here to tell you all about their business and passion for food. Read on to find out how they prepare and plan for weddings, how they’ll work with you to create the dishes of your dreams and their advice for couples looking for a caterer for their wedding.
(Sorry about the food photos. I hope you’re not hungry!)
How did you get into wedding catering?
Our Director, Natasha Steiner, has over 20 years’ experience in the catering and hospitality industry. After training at the world-renowned Christina Martin School of Food & Drink in Durban, South Africa and spending many years within motorsport, Lemon Zest Cuisine was created from her home kitchen in 2002. Developing from a small canapé distributor, we have grown to offering the full shebang of 3 – course wedding catering. Voila, here we are 15 years later!
What’s a typical wedding day like for you?
Setting up a wedding the day before is a godsend, it means some of our set-up is complete and the Bride has seen all of her hard work pay off and minds are at ease ready for the big day.
We arrive at Lemon Zest HQ to carefully pack our produce and equipment before heading to the couple’s chosen venue.
Onsite, it’s time to unload, prepare canapés (and drinks) and add the last few touches to the wedding breakfast tables.
Service approaches and we say hello to our fabulous team of ‘Lemons’ to help the day run smoothly.
Sometimes we are lucky enough to be part of the evening shenanigans too by offering our evening food services!
How do the menus get chosen?
We have a carefully chosen menu that offers a range of styles, presentation and tastes. Many hours of decision making between the whole team which is lovely! These are compiled of our favourites, home cooked hearty dishes, trends that pop up and good old family feasts.
These are of course only a small insight into what we can offer, many of our dishes can be amended and tweaked to suit a couple’s ideal menu for their celebrations.
Tastings are a great way to get to know our couples and we love hearing all about their plans. They are invited to our humble abode in Brackley, Northamptonshire, where they can try fully sized and precisely presented dishes; an exact replica of what can be expected on the day.
What do you love most about catering for weddings?
We love that no 2 weddings are ever the same, and this keeps us on our toes! Creating dishes that complement our happy couples and reflect their image and personality is very important to us!
What’s the hardest thing about being a wedding caterer?
Not digging into the dishes we are preparing – oops!
Tastings are great as we get to meet our couples face to face, but we also get sneaky samples after. I mean, we have to ensure our dishes are tried and tested, right!?
What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you on a wedding day?
I’m afraid this is our ‘magicians code’. There’s no problem that we can’t overcome!
Is there a wedding you’ve worked on that really sticks out in your mind?
We surely can’t pick just one!
Each of our co-ordinators works closely with individual couples in the run-up to their big day and all have favourite aspects of their weddings.
We have seen some fabulous Tipi / Festival style weddings this year with a Bride ticking all the detail boxes. (Tick!) One Bride had also bought the ‘outside in’ to her venue with 6ft tall blossom trees filling the room, that was a jaw dropper!
Whose wedding would you really like to do the food for? Past, present or future.
Of course, it would be the next Royal wedding, who wouldn’t want to be part of such a prestigious day! We hear HRH Harry may be in need of a caterer?
What do you usually do when you get home from a wedding?
For many of the team, it’s certainly a nice warm cup of tea. (And by tea, of course, I mean a glass of wine!) Then off to bed before another busy day ahead.
If you could give a couple one piece of advice for their wedding, what would it be?
We love hearing ideas that couples have, deviating from our menus is always fun. We always encourage them to choose the dishes of their dreams, something to reflect them.
Always ask questions, no matter how big or small, the answer could be just what you’re after!
