Stand on the stone bridge, turn 360° and you’ll see why Deene Park is one of Northamptonshire’s best wedding venues.

From one spot, you can take in the grandeur of the house with its amazing architecture, exquisite english country gardens (listen carefully and you'll hear them whispering at you to explore), and the calming countryside (including the serenity of a huge lake, acres of parkland and ancient trees).

And where else has Highland coos with noses that look like cross-stitch (from a distance!), black swans that know their camera angles, and stately stag statues that fool even the local fallow deer (and the odd wedding photographer)?

Yep, Deene Park has it all.

But the thing I like best? The team.

As a Deene Park wedding photographer, I get a peek behind the scenes - and team Deene isn't what you'd typically expect of wedding venue coordinators. Don't get me wrong, it's not that other venues aren't good. It's just that here, they're so much more.

Having huge experience helps. But these wedding pros also really care, go above and beyond as standard, and do whatever's needed to make sure everything goes not just to plan but also like magic.

It isn't their job to look after me - and yet they do. Some of the things they've done to help me this year include: arranging dresses, asking car drivers to turn around (multiple times), gathering guests from all around the gardens ready for group shots, carrying my camera bag during the portrait session, moving decor in the marquee to the best angle for each shot, and assembling the confetti line while I finish my couple's portraits.

These are all things that take a load off my mind and plate. Which means I can concentrate on actually taking the photos and ultimately do a better job for my couples.

And if they take care of me like that, imagine how well they'll look after you...

Deene Park leaves a lasting impression on everyone ...
Just ask the Brudenell family. They arrived in 1514 and never left!

Five reasons you’ll love Deene Park for your wedding photography

A quick glimpse of Deene Park’s gatehouse and grounds each time I drove by on the way to Stamford told me all I needed to know … that it’s right up my wedding aisle. And for years, I waited, and sighed every time I went past. Then three bookings (an engagement shoot, a wedding, and a styled shoot) came along in the space of three months.

Since then, I’ve been back many times and got to know my way around. With such a large estate, it’s helpful to know the layouts and shortcuts, as it means more time is spent taking photos rather than wondering what will look good or getting lost.

I marvel at Deene every time. But I feel I’ve barely photographed anything there. Because the more you explore, the more there is to see; and of course, the grounds change hugely through the seasons. So whilst I always leave feeling frustrated I couldn’t do everything possible, the beauty is that every couple gets something different.

So I’m crossing all the things that you’ll give me a yell if you’re planning a wedding at Deene Park!

True Love Stories

HAVE A NOSE

Lucy & Richard turned tradition on its head and did the legal bit first thing in the morning - in shorts and t-shirts. Then they retreated to their hotel and got ready for their outdoor celebrant ceremony and a garden marquee reception. All topped off with fireworks.

Steph and Lee got married at Brigstock church and had a sailcloth marquee reception by the lakeside at Deene Park. With cake for breakfast, a naked tipi chillout area for cocktail hour, and a surprise Viennese Waltz in the evening, there's lots of inspo in this one!

RUN, DON’T WALK

This tipi editorial shoot at Deene Park is full of 'rustic but elegant, with a hint of Tuscany' ideas. But never mind the classic whites and greens and lemons. I'm all about the crostini grazing platters, lemon dessert station, and s'mores store!

CHECK IT OUT

You can have an outdoor wedding ceremony in the walled garden at Deene Park. And because the wedding pavilion is purpose-built, it's entirely practical for weddings. There are even hooks to hang things and a wet-weather solution! Not many other venues can say that!

“Amazing! We are on our honeymoon but have snuck a look and they look incredible - can't wait to look at them properly on a proper screen when we get back!! … They look even more fab on a real screen!!! Thank you so much!”

How are you doing?

Build in golden hour. Deene Park is one of the best wedding venues for golden hour photos. If you’d like some romantic pictures of the two of you in this gorgeous light, set aside around 20 minutes before sunset.

05.

Hold your speeches outside. Since the gardens are so beautiful, why not have your speeches outside? It’s a super relaxed way to do them and will give those photos a real sense of place. It isn’t wrong to do them in the marquee, many couples do, it’s just an informal alternative that photographs beautifully.

04.

Book a photographer who’s familiar with Deene Park. Whoever you choose, make sure it’s someone who knows their way around the venue (or can do a pre-wedding shoot with you, or arrive early to recce it on the day. It really helps when your photographer knows what’s where so you can save time and get the best out of your photos AND your wedding day.

03.

Layer your portraits. There are so many iconic and incredible spots for pictures of the two of you. But they’re spread through the estate and quite a walk. Wherever we do them, we’ll use each spot when you’re naturally closest to it. Some locations are best after your wedding breakfast so you don’t miss your entire drinks reception. And comfy shoes for grass and uneven ground are a must!

02.

Schedule group photos early. The gardens at Deene Park are enchanting and will lure your guests to explore. Probably right when you need them for your group photos! To avoid MIA family members, plan any group pictures early during your drinks reception.

FAQs

Anytime they have availability! Seriously though, the grounds of Deene Park are stunning in all seasons and incredibly well maintained so the gardens always look good. You're limited to late spring through to early autumn, so just pick your favourite time between those seasons!
St Nicholas Church in Bulwick (NN17 3DY) is the closest; less than five minutes away. It's part of the King's Cliffe Benefice and, at the time of writing this, you must have a connection to the church to get married there. But given Deene Park's convenient location right off the A43, it's easy to get to from some distance. Corby is all but on the doorstep and you've got Stamford, Uppingham, Kettering, Oundle, and south Rutland all within easy reach. Roughly, anywhere within the A47, A6003, A14, and A605 is accessible on a wedding day.
I adore the house courtyard and the bridge for a structured background with strong architectural frames. For a more natural setting, the White Garden is lovely and close to hand, or if you have time after dinner, I adore the Yew Tree Walk and Pleasure Grounds, especially in May when it's a sea of cow parsley. For the house and garden in one, the rose garden, parterre, and steps down to the canal are dreamy. It's a vast venue though and takes significant time to get from place to place, so I recommend two or three portrait sessions dotted through your day to make use of different locations as you naturally move through your day.
My personal favourite spot is the patio in front of the stone Summerhouse. The planting is pretty and it's solid underfoot; ideal if the grass is wet and for ladies in heels. It's just to the side of the area of your drinks reception so we won't need to drag your guests too far. But really, there are lots of lovely spots and it always pays to work with the light, weather, and interest in the garden at the time.
If you'd like photos in the house courtyard, we need to plan that with the team at Deene Park because it's kept locked and we'll need to be accompanied. It works best to do photos here following your arrival from church or ceremony in the walled garden, as it's the closest it will ever be at that point — making the best use of time. We can take portraits of you two after dinner in the gardens and grounds, and then once the evening has started, we can only go as far as the bridge (for lakeside weddings) and must stay within the walled garden (for garden weddings). Apart from that, we just really need to be mindful that Deene is a private home and respect the family's space.
Deene Park has it covered! If you're having an outdoor ceremony in the walled garden, there's a marquee roof that can go up and you'll be sheltered under the Garden Pavilion. For pictures of the two of you, there are covered doorways in the house courtyard which are ideal. For photos in the gardens and grounds, we're more exposed and will need to grab some big umbrellas or wait for a dry moment. If you have a wedding car, they may be able to drive you to the bridge for photos on arrival or straight after your ceremony. And for group photos, we can use the Garden Pavilion (or wait for a break in the rain).
For a large hotel with restaurant and spa, Kettering Park Hotel (NN15 6XT) is 20 minutes away. For a cosy cottage group stay, The Swallows Rest B&B in Brigstock is 15 minutes away. Ashton Estate (PE8 5LF), around 20 minutes, has a selection of incredible holiday lets for couples and groups. And Rushton Hall (NN14 1RR) is just 15 minutes. For guests, try The Corby/Kettering Holiday Inn (NN18 8ET) which is less than 10 minutes' drive.
For a quick refuel (literal and metaphorical) there's a BP petrol station (plus Starbucks and Greggs) 5–10 minutes away in Corby heading south on the A43 (NN17 3HT). The village shop in Bulwick has a covered terrace and the food is heaven on a plate — tapas, ploughman's, cake. Find it at NN17 3DY. For more choice and a breath of air, the market towns of Oundle and Uppingham are less than 20 minutes away; great for independent stores, cafes, and restaurants.
No, travel is included. It's around half an hour from me so very local and a lovely cross-country drive.

The black swans are Australian and named Sydney and Adelaide.

If you spot a seahorse around the estate, that’s the official crest of the Brudenell family.

The estate doubled as the setting for Thornfield Hall in the 1983 BBC adaptation of Jane Eyre.

The house has over 100 rooms, including a Christmas present room.

There’s a teapot theme at Deene - four topiary teapots in the parterre, a teapot on top of the millennium obelisk. They’re an ode to the late Edmund Brudenell’s favourite drink.
