A wedding made of real moments

Lydia and Rory’s album is proof that the most beautiful moments can’t be staged or forced. They can only be felt, honoured, and discreetly captured as they naturally unfold. It’s the kind of day and energy that makes being a documentary wedding photographer so humbling and rewarding. I love it when heartfelt moments have space to unfold without intervention. To me, a wedding is all the more joyful and meaningful for it.

These photos are absolutely stunning, we were blown away by how amazing they all are. Thank you so much to you and Dominique for capturing every special moment and angle, we’re so happy with them 🥹 it’s so lovely to go through them and live the moments again. Thank you so so much for everything – it was everything we wanted and we cannot thank you enough.”

Lydia & Rory

The morning it all became real

You could feel the excitement buzzing in the room as Lydia got ready with her mum and bridesmaids. Everyone was chatting and laughing as they took their turn in the hair and makeup artists’ chairs. Her Bridesmen joined partway through and brought the biggest hugs with them. Then it was time to get dressed, and it was all hands on deck helping each other with buttons, bows, and jewellery.

And then Dad walked in – look at his face! You see so many ‘dress reveals’ on social media now; it’s become a tradition. Sometimes they feel like those involved simply understood the assignment! But this one felt different. It wasn’t engineered or expected. It just unfolded naturally as Dad opened the door. And the emotion between them was really, really beautiful. They both cried and laughed, hugged tightly and toasted each other, like a chain reaction of feelings flowing between them! One of those moments that said so much, without anyone actually saying anything at all.

Meanwhile, Rory got ready with his Dad, best man, and ushers in my favourite room at Rushton – The Oak bedchamber. That light! It’s a dream. And while people often say it’s easier for a groom to get ready, anyone who’s ever watched a group of groomsmen try to fold pocket squares and pin buttonholes knows it’s not entirely stress-free! But you can see in these photos how it leads to the loveliest moments of connection as everyone helps (and ribs) each other.

And then they were married

The ceremony took place in the orangery ballroom, which is beautifully bright even in winter. The light and airy space matched their mood perfectly – serene atmosphere, gentle emotions washing over everyone.

And then, once they were married and had signed the register… look at their exit photos. Pure joy! The room erupted in cheers and claps, and Rory’s playful air punch delighted everyone – most of all Lydia. I love that her expression is equal parts “You didn’t!” and “I love that you did that!” This single moment captured something beautiful about their relationship – the way they bring out each other’s joy.

Time to sink into

Lydia and Rory had exclusive use of the venue, so they chose to hold their drinks reception in the courtyard. It’s a grand space that takes in some of Rushton’s defining architecture, but being self-contained it also has an intimate, relaxed feel. Some guests settled on the low walls in the warmth of the sun, others kept cool under parasols, all with refreshing drinks in hand. It felt like a really special garden party.

They gave themselves a full two hours for this part of the day, which is the sweet spot. So often, the drinks reception feels rushed, but Lydia and Rory had time to breathe. Long enough to spend real time with their guests – and get the group photos they wanted without any time pressure. People often say “the day just flies by”, and yes, weddings move fast. But you can create space to be present and this was a brilliant example of that.

The ones to frame for the wall

Group photos need to be handled with care, especially when it’s hot! Well, it was a really warm day and the shaded areas in the courtyard were occupied with guests and drinks stations. So we moved to the front of the house for group photos as it was nicely shaded and meant everyone stayed cool and comfortable. You can see how relaxed everyone looks. On a sunny day, the shade is so much more flattering in photos. No squinting into the sun or harsh highlights on faces!

As always, I was on the look out for natural moments unfolding in between the expected photos and loved capturing all four parents sharing a quiet conversation while waiting their turn. It’s a picture I always look for but it’s rare to catch them all that close together at the same time, so that’s quite special.

Less pose, more presence

Same approach for Lydia and Rory’s portraits – find the shade, be happy! No one looks relaxed when they’re overheating! Luckily, Rushton has plenty of natural beauty to work with. We used the canopy of this gorgeous tree and the path through the sunken garden. A little light direction brought together the beautiful background and soft light… and then I gave space to Lydia and Rory to just be with each other. Look at how at ease they are in these shots – they were so happy, which made it an absolute dream to photograph.

And I love that a few of their friends spotted them and cheekily peeked around the corner mid-photos! Those unplanned moments are everything.

When the energy became electric

Lydia and Rory’s joy just kept growing and growing!

Their entrance into dinner was wonderfully wild – napkins waving, people whistling, stamping their feet, cheering. Look at the shot of them dancing their way across the room, hands held high, totally lit up by the joy of it all. This is one of my all-time favourite wedding photos – they’re beaming, full of life, and so happy to be surrounded by the people they love. You can feel the joyful chaos radiating from it.

The speeches were a full rollercoaster of emotions. Big laughs, some slightly risky stories, and so much love. You can see some of the emotional reactions captured in these candid shots – it was such a joy to document. And it ended with an impromptu standing ovation (clearly a lot of love in the room for Lydia and Rory) and Rory’s ‘Under New Management’ badge!

But it was what happened after the speeches that really moved me. As everyone else left the room, Lydia, Rory, and their speakers and closest loved ones lingered a little longer. Look at them all in these photos – hugging, squeezing hands, laughing together, crying into their napkins. Such raw emotion, gratitude, and love flowing between them. What made it so beautiful was how unguarded they all were in that moment – no awareness of the camera, just hearts wide open. These unplanned moments are exactly why I do what I do.

As the day flowed into evening

After dinner, we took a walk down to the lake for a few relaxed portraits. This spot is a little far to include during the drinks reception, so it’s ideal to save for after dinner when the time pressure is off. It’s also a lovely way to get photos in different parts of the venue without feeling like you’ve spent your whole day posing for the camera.

Then it was cake-cutting – with a sword! Look at their expressions as they fully leaned into the fun of it. A total delight.

Their first dance was another emotional ride! It started sweet and emotional with big bear hugs, holding each other tight, a tear rolling down Rory’s cheek, Lydia right there beside him. And then the music changed and the mood flipped – full party mode! That energy caught everyone. No holding back. Just joy, connection, and everyone truly letting go.

Sound like your cuppa? Pop the kettle on and explore my little corner of the internet.

I hope this post was exactly what you needed.

If you tumbled down the Google rabbit hole and are wondering who I am or how you ended up here, let me introduce myself...

I’m Sarah Vivienne, a relaxed wedding photographer based in Northamptonshire (but I happily roam the UK for a good love story). I work with big-hearted couples who are planning countryside celebrations - where connection, not perfection, is the star of the show.

With nearly 20 years’ experience under my camera strap, I know a wedding isn’t about the photos. It’s about a day where you’re so immersed in the moment you forget the camera’s even there. My job? To bottle up all the timeless natural magic, so you can relive it forever.
